Hazell, Kravetz and Roberts to Headline Poetry Café

Poetry Café Bellas Artes will feature three dynamic and prolific San Miguel poets on Thursday, September 22: Tim Hazell, Sallie Kravetz, and Rick Roberts.

 

Tim Hazell is the author of four books published by the Texas Heritage Music Foundation (www.texasheritagemusic.org). He will read from the two most recently published: A Symbolist Bouquet (poetry and paintings), and Poets Breathing Life – A Glimpse into the Mysteries of Poetry and Poets (articles, essays and recipes).

Tim’s poetry and paintings have appeared in West Coast Review – a Literary Quarterly, Waves, The Antigonish Review, Queen’s Quarterly, Event, Descant, Toronto Life Magazine, The Canadian Forum, CVII, Canadian Author and Bookman, Southloop Review and other literary periodicals. He has published more than 200 articles featuring poetry, music, aesthetics and native cultures with a focus on Latin America, and he writes “Cultural Perspectives,” a weekly column published by Atención San Miguel.

When Sallie Kravetz “graduated” from elementary school, in her autograph book her teacher wrote: “To Sallie…author, artist, poet.” Those words were to frame her passion and pursuits throughout the rest of her life.

As a high school library/media specialist she wrote and produced a variety of multi-media presentations. In the Baltimore arts community, she penned columns on trending arts issues and authored Ethel Ennis: The Reluctant Jazz Star, a biography of the Baltimore jazz legend. More recently, she designed and authored a small photography book, Streetwalk: Mexico City. She is an active member of a growing poetry community fueled by the magic alchemy of the inimitable Judyth Hill.

These days, Sallie fulfills her lifelong journey as author, artist, and poet through the creation of books of images and short poems focused on recent travels.

When asked for a brief biographical sketch, Rick Roberts replies, “He began writing late in the day, and finding no other way to the other side of himself, will, with luck, continue writing till his day is done.” When asked for a bit more information he responds, “Everyone is a storyteller, only some of us write our stories down. There is an old philosophical conundrum: ‘Is it the singer or the song?’ Many say it is both, but for me it is the song which must endure. We are only the caretakers of the songs and stories that live on the breeze. We have only to get out of our own way to hear them.”

Poetry Café Bellas Artes meets monthly (September-April) to feature local and visiting poets (established and emerging) sharing original work in a casual setting.
