San Miguel Poetry Café Presents Jacqueline Suskin and Laura Juliet Wood
Two outstanding poets, Jacqueline Suskin and Laura Juliet Wood, will present their work via Zoom at the San Miguel Poetry Café on October 8, 2020, 5:00 PM CST. The readings broadcast via Zoom reach a multinational audience.
Jacqueline Suskin is a California-based poet and educator who has been teaching workshops, writing books, and creating spontaneous poetry around the world since 2009. She has composed over 40,000 poems with her ongoing improvisational writing project, Poem Store, in which patrons choose a topic in exchange for a unique verse she composes spontaneously, usually on a manual typewriter. She is the author of seven books, including Help in the Dark Season (Write Bloody, 2019) and Every Day is a Poem (Sounds True, 2020). Her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Atlantic, and Yes! magazine. She lives in Northern California. For more, see jacquelinesuskin.com. Her latest book Every Day Is a Poem may be purchased HERE.
Following her reading, Jacqueline has agreed to spontaneously compose a poem as part of this live event.
Laura Juliet Wood is the author of two collections of poems: All Hands Lost (Finishing Line Press, 2012) and Dreaming During the Advent of Rain (Finishing Line Press, 2020), as well as co-translator with Allen Josephs of The Insistence of Harm by Spanish poet Fernando Valverde (University Press of Florida, 2019). Her translations of prose and poetry in Spanish have appeared in Mexico City’s The Ofi Press and the first three volumes of Solamente en San Miguel. Her own poems have been featured in Crab Creek Review, The Hollins Critic, The Los Angeles Review, The Atlanta Review, Minerva Rising and The West Marin Review, among many others. She has taught poetry workshops for San Miguel Summer Workshops, San Miguel Writers’ Conference, and the Pensacola Cultural Center. She holds a B.A. in creative writing from Hollins University and an M.F.A. in fiction from Columbia University. Laura has lived in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for 20 years. She and her three small children now divide their time between that colonial city and her hometown of Pensacola, Florida. Her latest book Dreaming During the Advent of Rain is available HERE.
A live Q&A with both poets will follow the event.
Founded in January 2016, the San Miguel Poetry Café convenes monthly, September through April, and also holds special events. The all-volunteer organization presents local and visiting poets, both established and emerging. If you are a poet and would like to be considered for an upcoming reading, please submit sample poems and a brief bio to poetrycafe@sanmiguelliterarysala.org.
Pre-registration for the October 8 event is required and is free of charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.
