In 2015 the San Miguel Literary Sala, sponsoring organization for the Writer’s Conference, collaborated with Bellas Artes to create an extraordinary new literary program for the San Miguel community — the Sala Literaria. This room, located on the ground floor in the southwest corner, is the hub of the organization’s outreach to the Spanish speaking community.

Available here is a non-circulating bilingual library of books for both adults and children. The books have been donated from several sources including Bellas Artes and a large collection from the celebrated writer and Literary Sala member, Sandra Cisneros.

The Sala Literaria is a center for literary projects for San Miguel youth and children in both Spanish and English, including poetry readings, ongoing classes, and writing workshops for all ages with a focus on teenagers from local high schools, and a Bilingual Reading Circle that promotes reading and cultural integration.

The programs in the room will emphasize the teaching of writing skills, encouraging and mentoring youth to enjoy writing of all kinds, from journals and personal writing to poetry, short stories, nonfiction, and novels.

Additionally, Maia Williams, Co-Director of the Writers’ Conference, hosts San Miguel Poetry Café in the Sala Literaria September thru April, at 5:00 PM on the third Thursday of each month. Local and visiting poets, established and emerging, share their work in a coffee-house setting.

Bellas Artes is easy to find. As you approach the Centro you can’t miss the gracious bell tower. Stop by for 15 minutes or two hours, the spacious grounds are like a breath of fresh air.
