“The Past Is a Foreign Country:
Why History Matters”
February 11, 2015

Tracy Chevalier thought she had little interest in history until a short chapter on 16th-century French Huguenots grew and took over her first novel, changing her writing forever. Now she can’t imagine writing anything else, and embraces the label of historical novelist. Why has history become so important to her? Why does she think the past should matter to us all? The answers may surprise and challenge.

Description

Before turning to writing full-time Tracy was a reference book editor for several years. She is the author of seven novels. Her second novel, Girl with a Pearl Earring, won the Barnes and Noble Discover Award, sold 4 million copies worldwide, and was made into a film starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson.

When Tracy was a child, she was the president of the Laura Ingles Wilder Club at her local library! She holds a BA in English from Oberlin College, Ohio, and an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, England.

She was born in Washington DC, where her father was a photographer for the Washington Post, but she has lived in England her entire adult life. She currently lives in London with her husband and son.
