The Literary Sala on March 8 is proud to present Gerard Helferich, author of An Unlikely Trust and memoirist and photographer, Janet Sternburg, author of White Matter: A Memoir on Family and Medicine.
Gerard Helferich
Gerard Helferich’s fifth nonfiction book is entitled An Unlikely Trust: Theodore Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan, and the Improbable Partnership that Remade American Business. It is a study of the collaboration between Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, two very different men who came together for the good of the nation despite their sometimes conflicting interests. It is a story of inspiration for our times. J. P. Morgan was instrumental in resolving the Great Coal Strike of 1902, which was the first great test of Roosevelt’s presidency and which was threatening the country with full-scale social warfare. Then, the two men worked together to resolve the Panic of 1907, avoiding unmitigated financial disaster. Morgan and Roosevelt sowed the seeds for government regulation of business as we know it (or knew it until recently). Their relationship helped to split the Republican Party in 1912. And now, according to Helferich, the Trump administration is feverishly undoing the essential system of business regulation that Roosevelt and Morgan established.
Janet Sternburg
Janet Sternburg’s memoir, White Matter, touches on a topic we see frequently in today’s news, mental illness. Her memoir intertwines the story of two lobotomized relatives, the history of lobotomy itself, and how she channeled the despair of her family’s story and her own coming of age into a career of art, film-making, poetry and photography.
She will discuss the relationship between facts and creativity in writing memoir, offering her own guidelines, which she calls “scrupulous imagination.” She may also touch lightly on her career as a photographer and her new book, Overspilling World.
